To resist the development plans of the Brazilian government to build what would be the third-largest dam in the world.
This project will help the local indigenous communities mobilize in Brazil to resist the development plans of the Brazilian government to build what would be the third-largest dam in the world. The tractors, bags of cement and workers are arriving in Altamira, Brazil as you read this. The indigenous peoples of the region are ready to mobilize in response but need your support to make this happen.
The rainy season has kept construction at bay for the moment yet despite growing local, national and international opposition, the Brazilian government is preparing to give the green light, any day now, for the Belo Monte Dam to be built on the Xingu River in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. If built, it would be the third-largest dam in the world. The dam complex would divert nearly the entire flow of the Xingu River along 100 kilometers and devastate an extensive area of the Amazon rainforest, threatening the survival of indigenous and traditional peoples and displacing up to 40,000 people. With more than 80 percent of the Belo Monte dam to be funded by BNDES (the Brazilian National Development Bank), Belo Monte is a critical battle in the fight for the Amazon and for Latin America’s future. Belo Monte is the gateway dam for 70 proposed dams throughout the Amazon.
Amazon Watch is working with a coalition of Brazilian and international organizations to stop the dam, providing direct support to affected riverbank and indigenous communities while serving as a bridge between media, legal, and grassroots representatives in Brazil and their supporters internationally.
Together we’ve gathered and delivered over 600,000 global petition signatures; we’ve organized protests; we’ve filed lawsuits; we’ve gone to the Inter-American Commission; we’ve reached out to celebrities, politicians and academics; we’ve promoted alternatives and we’ve received favorable media coverage, but the Brazilian government is steadfast in its desire to build this dam.
Indigenous and local communities are not giving up and neither are we. Your support is needed NOW to support the last stand in defense of the Xingu River and its people!
Scenes from a historic indigenous gathering held in the Kayapó village in the Amazonian state of Mato Grosso. This assembly was called to discuss the impending human rights and environmental disaster that is the Belo Monte Dam on the Lower Xingu — in particular the menace it represents to Brazil’s indigenous peoples — and ways for its opponents to forge a single and unified force to resist its construction.
